This super low price includes return shipping of your tonearm within USA. I may buy or may build the cable from the tonearm to the pre. Now you can have your favourite Rega, OL, Moth, J.A.Michell OEM Rega tonearm professionally internally rewired with high quality Cardas Pure Copper Litz tone arm wire, Cardas solid Brass Gold plated cartridge clips and using the highest quality Cardas solder for Only 169. I want to build my arm with a detachable tonearm cable for multiple reasons.
I'm leaning towards using the Litz for ease of manufacturing and lessening the chance of introducing "drag" at the pivot.
He was great to deal with and very knowledgeable and gave me detailed instructions on sending him the arm. I researched various options and decided on Alfred Kayser at in Canada. I think the Litz is made from thirty strands.ĭoes the Cardas truly have a sonic advantage over the Litz?Īre my concerns about the fragile insulation of the Litz founded or unfounded? A couple of months ago I bit the bullet and sent my vintage SME-3009 tonearm in for a complete refurbishing and rewiring. If the tonearm grommets are destroyed I could see the silk insulation being less abrasion resistant than the Cardas. The more flexible leads should lessen the chance of introducing "drag" at the pivot point. I've read that you can pull the insulation off if you grip it between two pieces of very fine emery cloth/paper. The Litz wire sounds like it has a tremendous advantage in flexibility and ease of stripping.
I think I read that the Cardas is made up from seven strands. The forty plus year old wiring has been updated with Cardas wiring from the headshell coupling to the Art Pop RCA plugs. On the plus side I could see that the tougher insulation might be an advantage it the rubber grommets in the tonearm get destroyed (can almost bank on it) during the rebuild. The toughness of the insulation also makes it harder to strip (it sounds like the only method that works is to melt it off).
It's my understanding that the insulation is very tough and is much less flexible than the silk covered Litz wire also used. It seems to be legendary for the improvement in sound it brings, but not without a little baggage. I want to throw out some notes that I have taken and see how many of you can support or dispel what I think I've learned so far.Ĭardas 33ga seems to be the "gold standard" when talking about tonearm rewiring. For months I've been reading everything I can find about tonearm upgrades and now have a "patient" in the waiting room. After some good fortune this weekend I now have an "extra" Rega RB250 in the house.
